Learning a new skill is scary. When you just begin, you usually won’t get it right immediately. In fact, I don't even always get it right and I have been painting for years.
Sketching and painting is a skill that evolves over time and it is still ever evolving for me. I think that is the beauty of painting and illustrating - there is always something new to discover and learn. I believe there are no direct rules in art and while I show you the methods I use, you will be free to continue your journey and discover your own voice through experimentation and practice.
I designed this course for art enthusiasts of all levels, from absolute beginners to people who have started painting already.

Hi, I am Karina Giada!
I'm a freelance watercolor artist and illustrator. Entirely self-taught, I focus primarily on watercolor portraits and character art of your favorite books. More recently, I have started illustrating for indie authors and publishing houses, including projects such as the 54-card Outlander Oracle Deck, coming out in July 2025.
A lot of you have asked about my traditional art process: What inspires me? How to come up with accurate features for a character? How to make the character’s personality jump off the paper? And more importantly, how do we paint it all in watercolor so we can then frame and hang it in the office?

Course Content
The course has 11 modules for 6+ hours of learning and practicing. It also includes full-length artwork tutorials! You can pause and replay the videos as much as you want. The course is suitable for everyone, teens, adults and children because there is no explicit content. It would be best to take the course in order, because it will start from the basics to lessons at a more advanced level.

IN MY COURSE YOU WILL LEARN:
MODULES 1, 2, AND 3
The Beginnings
In these modules, you’ll start with the basics: meeting the artist, find inspiration in references, and understand character design. We will also go over the materials the artist recommends and beyond!
MODULES 4 AND 5
Sketching and Refining
Before you begin diving into illustrating your portraits, it’s imperative we learn how to quickly sketch portraits. We will also practice capturing likenesses from references, which will build your foundation for creating your own evocative portraits.
MODULES 6 AND 7
Watercolor Techniques
You’ll master foundational watercolor techniques like wet-on-wet, wet-on-dry, dry-on-dry, and layering colors to create stunning effects. You’ll also refine your ability to create shadows, work with transparency, as well as capturing light, shadow, and texture.
MODULE 8
Practical Application and Set Up
We will combine everything we learned and begin sketching, modifying, and preparing our canvas. From finding references for two specific illustrations to transferring it on paper, we would be ready to begin our watercolor illustrating each journey!
MODULES 9, 10 AND 11
Illustrating and Digitizing Your Illustrations
In the final modules, you will dive into a step-by-step and a layer-by-layer process of painting two complete illustrations. You’ll explore advanced techniques like blending traditional watercolors, controlling paint flow, and mastering intricate brushwork. The course concludes with guidance on digitizing your artwork, reflecting on your progress, and planning your next artistic steps.

We will look together at the materials, basic techniques, and knowledge needed to begin this journey. Approaching a new technique means first learning how best to use the tools at your disposal.
Practical exercises
Theory is important, but what makes you a true artist is practice... Lots of practice! You'll find lots of exercises to get started with and from which to get inspiration. I will show you some tricks that will make your drawings truly unique and masterpieces.
